Dear Members, Parishioners, Parents, Students, Staff and Friends,

The Executive Directors of the Greek Orthodox Community of East Vancouver, together with the school administrators continue to monitor the development of the Novel  Coronavirus Disease ( COVID-19) within our local jurisdictions, nationally and globally.

It is of our highest priority and mindset that the safety of every person visiting our property is paramount in our attention and concern, therefore we would like to outline the following:

  1. Due to the global impact the World Health Organisation has assessed COVID-19 to be characterized as a “pandemic”.

  2. At this time the Public Health Agency of Canada has assessed the risk associated with COVID-19 as “high for Canada”

  3. Vancouver Coastal Health has issued a statement that they consider the risk as “low for residents of British Columbia. People without symptoms do not pose a risk. “  This is supported by their statement of "The word pandemic is not an indication of how severe the virus might be. While the risk to British Columbians remains low, work continues at federal, provincial and local health authority levels."  ( )

  4. We are attaining constant updates from Ministry of Health, and privy to Ministry of Education and Federation of Independent Schools Association of BC updates as they relate to this matter.

With the above noted and considered, and as the Public health risk is reassessed daily, we will continue to re-evaluate our position.

  • In the interim to mitigate rare possibility of infection transmission we are in the process of examining sanitization options and adjusting our cleaning routine for the Chapel and property common areas.

  • We are also recommending that staff, clergy and volunteers re-consider any travel arrangements, with an emphasis on areas where the COVID-19 infection rates are globally recognized as high or vulnerable.

  • We also recommend and ask that you “self –quarantine” if you have or are visiting affected areas.

The BC Ministry of Health has outlined the following to assist in decreasing the risk of transmitting or contracting the COVID-19 disease

  • Frequently washing hands with soap and water

  • Use of Sanitizer where available

  • Refrain from touching one’s face

  • In relation to coughing /sneezing– using a disposable tissue or crease of elbow

  • Avoid the sharing of food and drinks

  • Self Quarantine when feeling ill

While your safety is important to us, we also ask that you consider other people’s safety, therefore it is strongly recommended that:

If you feel there is a possibility that you or a family member is infected, you should “stay at home”.   Further, in this type of scenario (where you believe you might have exposed others in our community ), it would be appreciated if you could contact (in confidence) either the Community President or our Reverend Father by phone or email. If you are not comfortable bringing this to their (our) attention – then we respectfully ask that you contact Vancouver Coastal Health and advise them accordingly by dialing 811  (the Provincial Health-link number).

As of March 20th we have closed all Church services to the public and restricted them only to the clergy. We will of-course attempt to live stream as many services as possible.

Furthermore , we have altered our office hours and advise that it is best to call and make an appointment before dropping in.

In the coming weeks, as more information and developments are derived for COVID-19, we want you to be assured that your health and wellness is an unmatched priority.   You should expect additional information and updates from our office as more information comes available.   While we will soon be posting updates on our website ( , we do recommend that you are attentive to information that is posted by Vancouver Coastal Health, the BC Ministry of Health and Public Health Agency of Canada as their instructions, advice and directions will supersede any information we might post.

We are also posting directives from the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Canada for your information and consideration.
